In September, 17 year old Blair McClymont and his dad Bobby are setting out on a fundraising venture for the charity Diabetes UK. They have signed up to cycle from London to Paris, by a 200 mile route, over 3 days in early
September 2011.

Blair is a 6th Year pupil at Ellon Academy and is Deputy Head Boy. He is also one of the 10 pupils in the school who gained 5 “A” passes at Higher in the 2011 SQA Exams and he is planning to apply to study Medicine at university.

He was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when he was 5 years old and a Primary One pupil at Meiklemill School. Since that time in January 2000, Blair has been given excellent support by the Children’s Hospital at ARI, by Ellon Health Centre and by staff at his two local schools.

His medical support has been backed up by his sporting activities in football with Formartine and Ellon Meadows Boys Clubs and in hockey by the Academy and Ellon Mens Hockey Club. He also plays saxophone in the Aberdeenshire Saxophone Orchestra, has taken exams in Classical Guitar and plays guitar in the local rock band “State of Emergency”.

Blair joined Ythan Cycling Club 2 years ago and is a regular participant in their events.

His dad, Bobby, will accompany him in cycling from London to Paris, the second time that the retired headteacher has tackled this event in support of Diabetes UK. Bobby was Headteacher for 13 years at Bridge of Don Academy before his retirement in 2007 and then was a part-time teacher in Ellon Academy’s Support for Learning Department for 3 years, completing 40 years as a teacher.

The attached photograph is being used to publicise their venture and is being circulated to friends and family. It carries details of the procedure for donations to Diabetes UK – similar to the justgiving.com website, but cutting out the agent and ensuring all of each donation goes to the charity.

Simply search the internet for diabeteschallenge.org.uk
Then in the search box of that page type in: Blair & Bobby Cycle London to Paris

Blair and Bobby have paid already paid the full cost of the trip so that all the money we raise will go to the charity. They hope that you can help support Diabetes UK.

Diabetes UK supports research into treatments and a possible cure for diabetes.
2.8 million people in UK have been diagnosed with diabetes and researchers estimate that up to 850,000 people have the condition but do not yet know it.
